The PC300 — India's Workhorse Heavy Excavator

The Komatsu PC300 occupies a critical position in India's construction and mining equipment landscape. Where the PC200 serves mid-size contractors and rental fleets, the PC300 is the machine that serious operators reach for when productivity matters more than daily rental cost — infrastructure contractors building highways and dams, quarry operators running multi-shift extraction, and mining companies moving large material volumes where a PC200 simply doesn't have the reach or bucket capacity to compete.

India's PC300 installed base spans three major operating generations — the PC300-6, PC300-7, and PC300-8 — with the PC300-7 and PC300-8 forming the backbone of active fleets. The PC300LC (long undercarriage) variant is particularly common in Indian quarrying and deep excavation applications, where ground pressure and machine stability in soft or unstable ground are critical. Many of these machines have crossed 12,000 and 15,000 hours and are on their second engine rebuild and third undercarriage set.

At Parts Trading Company, the PC300 series is one of our highest-demand Komatsu lines. We have been supplying hydraulic pumps, SAA6D114E engine parts, filter kits, and undercarriage components for these machines since the PC300-7 first entered India in significant numbers in the early 2000s. This guide covers everything you need to identify, source, and install the right part for the right generation.

PC300 Generation Guide — What Changed Between -6, -7, and -8

The PC300 model number encompasses three distinct engineering generations with different engines, different hydraulic architectures, and different electronic systems. Ordering parts without confirming the generation is the single most common — and most expensive — mistake in PC300 parts procurement.

Komatsu PC300-6 (1993–2000) — Serial Range: A11001~

The PC300-6 was the machine that established the PC300's reputation in Indian construction. It uses the SAA6D108E-2 engine — a 6.5-litre six-cylinder turbocharged unit producing approximately 160 kW (215 hp). The -6 generation uses a mechanical injection system without common-rail electronics, making it serviceable in locations where Komatsu diagnostic tools are not available. The hydraulic pump on the PC300-6 is the Kawasaki K3V180DT platform — a large-displacement tandem variable-displacement axial-piston pump, physically larger than the PC200's K3V112 family.

The PC300-6 has no integrated electronic control for the hydraulic pump. The monitor panel is straightforward: temperature, fuel, and charge warning indicators. No fault code display, no KOMTRAX. This simplicity makes -6 machines highly maintainable at independent workshops across India, and the machine is still working productively in quarrying and earthmoving fleets that have maintained it carefully.

Parts availability for the -6's SAA6D108E-2 engine has declined compared to the -7 and -8 generations. Procure critical seals and gaskets when they are available rather than waiting for a breakdown.

Komatsu PC300-7 (2000–2007) — Serial Range: B30001~

The PC300-7 is a fundamentally redesigned machine compared to the -6. It introduced the SAA6D114E-3 engine — a 8.3-litre six-cylinder turbocharged unit producing 170 kW (228 hp). This is one of the most widely used engine platforms in the heavy equipment industry, shared across multiple Komatsu excavator, dump truck, and wheel loader models, which means aftermarket parts support is excellent and will remain so for years to come.

The PC300-7 also introduced Komatsu's CLSS (Closed-centre Load Sensing System) hydraulic architecture to the 30-tonne class. The CLSS system delivers hydraulic flow proportional to demand rather than at a fixed rate, dramatically reducing heat generation and improving cycle times. The main pump is the Kawasaki K3V180DTP — mechanically similar to the -6's pump but with the new CLSS regulator and port plate. Later PC300-7 serial numbers include Komatsu's KOMTRAX telematics system.

Komatsu PC300-8 (2007–2018) — Serial Range: C20001~

The PC300-8 is the most common generation in active Indian fleets today. It uses the SAA6D114E-3 engine in its Tier 3 / Stage IIIA emissions configuration, producing 177 kW (237 hp) — a 4% power increase over the -7 achieved primarily through improved turbocharger mapping. The fuel system remains mechanically injected (not common-rail), which is a significant advantage in the Indian context: no high-pressure injector failures, no injector cleaning requirements, and no fuel cleanliness specifications that the Indian market struggles to meet consistently.

The PC300-8 introduced refined CLSS hydraulics with improved pump response curves, a significantly upgraded monitor panel with fault code display, and ECO guidance feedback. The cab design was substantially revised for operator comfort, and KOMTRAX became standard equipment. The -8 generation also introduced the PC300LC-8 (long undercarriage) as a distinct catalogued variant rather than an option — reflecting the popularity of this configuration in Indian quarry applications.

PC300-7 vs PC300-8 engine parts: Both generations use the SAA6D114E-3 engine. Many engine parts — including cylinder heads, gasket sets, valve train components, and cooling system parts — are directly interchangeable between -7 and -8. Always cross-reference by serial number before ordering, but shared parts mean better availability and competitive pricing on both generations.

Filter Kit — Protecting the SAA6D114E Engine

The SAA6D114E-3 engine in the PC300-7 and -8 is mechanically robust and responds well to correct maintenance. Its primary vulnerability in the Indian operating environment is the cooling system — the large 8.3-litre engine generates significant heat, and a restricted or neglected radiator, combined with inadequate coolant quality, is the most common cause of serious engine damage in PC300 fleets.

A properly executed filter service at 500-hour intervals — covering the engine oil, fuel, and air systems simultaneously — is the most effective maintenance investment available to any PC300 operator.

Dust season advisory: In quarry, road-cutting, and demolition environments during Indian dry season (October–May), reduce air filter inspection to every 200 hours. Dust loading can restrict the outer element to change-required condition in as little as 400 hours in active quarry sites. A restricted air filter on the SAA6D114E causes measurable power loss before triggering the indicator — operators often attribute the performance decline to other causes.

Hydraulic System — Main Pump, Oil Cooler, Cylinder Seals

The PC300's CLSS hydraulic system is, when properly maintained, one of the most efficient and responsive in the 30-tonne excavator class. The load-sensing architecture ensures that the machine delivers exactly the flow demanded by each function — no more — which reduces heat generation and extends the life of hydraulic seals and hose assemblies. But when the hydraulic system develops problems, the CLSS architecture means that faults can present in unexpected ways, requiring systematic diagnosis rather than component swapping.

Main Hydraulic Pump — 708-2H Series

The PC300-7 and PC300-8 use the Kawasaki 708-2H series main hydraulic pump — a large tandem variable-displacement axial-piston pump with approximately 180 cc/rev displacement per section. The pump includes an integrated charge pump (gear type) that supplies the pilot circuit pressure (3.4–3.9 MPa on PC300-8) and a servo control mechanism that responds to the CLSS load-sensing signal from the control valves.

The 708-2H-00181 Komatsu Hydraulic Main Pump is available from our Mumbai stock for same-day dispatch. Always confirm the exact variant (708-2H-00181, 708-2H-00191, or 708-2H-00450) against your machine serial number before ordering — small differences in the port configuration and regulator settings make these variants non-interchangeable despite physical similarities.

Pump failure presents as: low hydraulic power, slow machine response, high hydraulic oil temperature, or total loss of one or more functions. Before condemning the pump, diagnose:

Oil Cooler and Radiator

The PC300-8's large engine and heavy-duty hydraulic circuit generate substantial heat. In Indian operating conditions — sustained heavy digging cycles in ambient temperatures of 40–48°C — oil cooler and radiator performance is a critical constraint. A partially blocked oil cooler will cause hydraulic oil temperatures to climb above 90°C, accelerating seal degradation throughout the circuit and eventually causing pump and motor failures that cost far more to repair than a cooler replacement.

The 207-03-51121 Komatsu Oil Cooler and 207-03-75121 Komatsu Radiator Assembly are available from our stock for the PC300-7 and -8. Clean the oil cooler fins with low-pressure compressed air or water at every 500-hour service — fin blockage from dust and debris is the most common cause of overheating on Indian job sites, and it is entirely preventable.

Cylinder Seal Kits for PC300

The PC300's three working cylinders (boom, arm/stick, and bucket) are significantly larger than a PC200's — the increased bore and rod dimensions mean higher seal contact pressures and higher replacement costs. Quality aftermarket seal kits are perfectly acceptable for field reconditioning; the seal material specification (NBR for standard temperatures, FKM/Viton for sustained high-temperature applications) matters more than the brand name on the packaging.

Engine — SAA6D114E-3 — Common Issues and Key Parts

The SAA6D114E-3 is a proven, conservative engine design that has accumulated tens of millions of operating hours across the Komatsu product range. It is not troublesome, but the conditions under which Indian PC300s work — high ambient temperatures, variable fuel quality, and extended hours without dealer-level service — create predictable failure patterns that experienced operators learn to anticipate.

Undercarriage — Track Chain, Rollers, Idler, Sprocket

Undercarriage cost on the PC300 is substantial — a full undercarriage replacement (both track chains, all rollers, idlers, and sprockets) runs ₹5,00,000–9,00,000 depending on whether OEM or quality aftermarket components are used. Operators who track wear correctly and replace components at the right time — not too early, but never so late that worn components accelerate damage to adjacent parts — achieve 20–30% better undercarriage cost-per-hour than operators who run to failure.

Bushing turn service for PC300: On standard (non-SALT) chain, the bushing turn service — rotating bushings 180 degrees at approximately 50% of chain wear life — is even more economically valuable on the PC300 than on the PC200, because chain replacement costs are higher. On a PC300 running standard chain in quarry conditions, the bushing turn (typically at 2,000–2,500 hours) can extend chain life by 40–60%, deferring a ₹1,50,000–2,50,000 chain replacement per side for another 2,000+ hours of operation.

OEM vs Aftermarket — PC300-Specific Comparison

For the full framework on OEM versus aftermarket decisions in the Indian market, see our OEM vs Aftermarket Heavy Equipment Parts guide. For the PC300 specifically, the economics strongly favour quality aftermarket on wear items and most service parts. OEM is justified only on precision fuel system components and, where available, on genuine Komatsu exchange units for major assemblies.

How to Identify Your PC300 Generation

The Komatsu serial number plate is located on the right side of the upper frame, near the engine compartment on the counterweight side. A second plate appears on the right cab door frame. The format is always: model code + hyphen + serial number. For the PC300LC, the plate reads "PC300LC-7" or "PC300LC-8" with a separate serial sequence from the standard PC300.
