Komatsu WA380 — India's Benchmark Medium Wheel Loader

The Komatsu WA380 is India's most widely used medium wheel loader in the 14–15 tonne class. Steel plants, quarry stockyards, cement terminals, coal yards, and port bulk handling operations across the country have standardised on the WA380 as the machine that offers the right balance of capacity (3.0–3.5 m³ bucket), manoeuvrability, and fuel efficiency for indoor and outdoor bulk material handling. PTC has stocked WA380 parts since the machine entered Indian service in the late 1990s.

The active generations in Indian fleets are: WA380-3 (1998–2008), WA380-6 (2008–2013), and WA380-8 (2013–present). The generation differences primarily affect the engine and fuel system architecture — the drivetrain and hydraulic systems have evolved more incrementally.

WA380 Generation Guide

Komatsu WA380-3 (1998–2008) — SAA6D114E-2 Engine

The WA380-3 uses the Komatsu SAA6D114E-2 engine — a 6.7-litre six-cylinder turbocharged unit producing 150 kW (201 hp). This is a mechanically managed fuel injection engine, making it robust and serviceable in remote locations without specialist diagnostic equipment. The torque converter transmission is a 4-speed planetary unit — a simple, well-understood drivetrain that field mechanics can service without special tools. Many WA380-3 machines in India are still operating productively with 12,000–18,000 hours after one engine overhaul.

Komatsu WA380-6 (2008–2013) — SAA6D107E-1 Engine

The WA380-6 introduced the SAA6D107E-1 engine — the same 6.7-litre common-rail unit used in the Komatsu PC200-8 excavator. This engine change brings the fuel system sensitivity of common-rail injection to the wheel loader platform — contaminated fuel damages injectors that cost ₹25,000–40,000 each. The -6 also introduced Komatsu's KDPF-ready architecture and the ECO gauge for fuel consumption feedback.

Komatsu WA380-8 (2013–Present) — SAA6D107E-3 Engine

The current WA380-8 uses the SAA6D107E-3 engine meeting Tier 4 Final / BS IV requirements, producing 155 kW (208 hp). The -8 generation includes Komatsu's KOMTRAX Plus telematics from the factory. The hydraulic system was updated with a new-generation pump for improved loading efficiency. Parts for the -8 generation are best sourced through Komatsu dealers or authorised aftermarket suppliers due to the current generation's tighter tolerance components.

SAA6D107E parts cross-reference: The WA380-6 and WA380-8 share the same engine platform as the Komatsu PC200-8 excavator. Engine oil filters (600-211-1340), fuel filters (600-319-3750), and many engine parts are interchangeable — useful when stocking for mixed fleets.

Drivetrain — Torque Converter, Transmission, Axles

The WA380 drivetrain is designed for durability in bulk material handling cycles — typically 1–2 minute dig-dump cycles with continuous bucket loading. The torque converter multiplies engine torque at the bucket face; the 4-speed power-shift transmission handles speed selection. High-cycle operation (stockyard handling, 8–10 hours per day) accelerates torque converter lock-up clutch wear and transmission clutch pack wear. Signs of transmission problems: delayed engagement, gear hunt, overheating, or failure to hold gear on grade.

Hydraulic System — Boom, Tilt, and Steering

The WA380 uses a dedicated steering hydraulic circuit — separate from the boom/tilt working circuit. If the steering becomes heavy or the machine wanders on a straight road, check the steering priority valve and steering pump before the steering gear. The boom and tilt circuits share the main implement pump; weak bucket curl or slow boom lift under load indicates main pump wear or a faulty implement relief valve.
