Komatsu D65 — The Medium Dozer for Indian Mining and Infrastructure

The Komatsu D65 is the medium-class dozer that sits between the lighter D51/D61 and the heavy D85/D155. In Indian mining operations — particularly in the coal fields of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh — the D65 is widely used for bench maintenance, stockpile spreading, and haul road construction. Its 18–19 tonne operating weight gives it enough mass for meaningful production dozing while remaining manoeuvrable in the constrained spaces of typical Indian mine benches.

D65 Generation Guide

Komatsu D65E-12 / D65PX-12 (2001–2009)

The D65E-12 uses the SAA6D114E-2 engine — a 6.7-litre six-cylinder turbocharged unit producing 140 kW (188 hp). The E-12 generation uses a mechanical injection pump — straightforward to service in the field. The D65PX-12 is the wide-gauge version with extended track frames and wider shoes for reduced ground pressure in soft conditions. The powertrain is a 3-speed planetary power-shift transmission with individual steering clutches.

Komatsu D65EX-15 / D65PX-15 (2009–2014)

The D65-15 introduced the SAA6D114E-3 engine with Tier 3 equivalence, producing 154 kW (207 hp). The -15 generation introduced Komatsu's SIGMADOZER blade geometry for improved blade loading and reduced blade spillage in typical earthmoving materials. The transmission was updated with smoother shift control.

Komatsu D65EX-17 / D65PX-17 / D65EX-18 (2014–Present)

The current D65-17 uses the SAA6D114E-5 engine with Tier 4 Interim / BS IV compatibility, producing 162 kW (217 hp). The -17 and -18 introduced the Parallel Link Undercarriage for reduced vibration and improved operator comfort. KOMTRAX Plus telematics is standard. Parts for current-generation D65 are best confirmed via Komatsu or authorised aftermarket with the machine serial number.

Undercarriage — D65 Dozer Requirements

Dozer undercarriage wears significantly faster than excavator undercarriage in comparable abrasive conditions because the machine's propulsion torque is applied directly through the track pins and bushings. The D65 in Indian rock-bench dozing operations may require undercarriage replacement at 2,000–3,000 hours instead of the 4,000–6,000 hours typical in soft-ground applications.
