The Caterpillar D6 is the benchmark medium-class dozer across every major market where earthmoving happens at scale. In India, the D6 is the standard machine for road sub-base preparation, dam embankment compaction, mine bench preparation, and land clearing. Its track record of reliability over five decades has created a massive installed base — and a deep aftermarket parts ecosystem that PTC has been supplying since the 1970s.
The D6 family spans three currently active generations in Indian fleets: the D6R (late 1990s through 2012), the D6N (2000–2018), and the D6T (2009–present, current generation). Each has a different engine and powertrain architecture that affects parts ordering significantly.
Depending on the serial and production year, the D6R uses either the CAT 3306B (naturally aspirated or turbocharged, 6.6-litre inline-six) or the CAT C9 engine. The 3306B is a pre-electronic mechanical fuel injection engine — highly repairable without specialist diagnostic tools and with exceptional aftermarket parts depth worldwide. The C9-powered D6R uses HEUI injection, same as the 336D excavator, bringing the fuel system complexity of common-rail-era engines.
D6R transmission: the 3-speed planetary power-shift transmission with declutch control. Service points: transmission oil change at 1,000 hours, bevel gear and final drive oil at 2,000 hours.
The D6N is the compact-frame variant of the D6 family — lighter than the D6R/D6T at approximately 16.5 tonnes. It was widely sold into the Indian market for road and building construction applications where the D6T's weight would cause ground disturbance issues. Engine: 3306B on earlier units, C7 ACERT (7.1-litre) on later D6N models. The D6N LGP (Low Ground Pressure) variant with wider track shoes was popular for soft-ground applications.
The current D6T uses the C9.3 ACERT engine (same as the 336D2 excavator) producing 155 kW (208 hp). The D6T introduced CAT's Advanced Modular Cooling System (AMOCS) with enhanced cooling efficiency in ambient temperatures up to 52°C — a critical feature for Indian conditions. The D6T XL/XW variants offer extended/wide track configurations for different applications.

Many D6R machines with the 3306B are still operating as second-hand purchases in India. The 3306B is one of the most reliable engines CAT ever produced and responds well to reconditioning. Common issues in aging Indian D6R fleet:
Dozer undercarriage wear depends heavily on operating surface. Rock, laterite, and compacted gravel cause significantly faster wear than soft soil or sand. D6T undercarriage specifications:
