Scania trucks and buses are among the most capable heavy vehicles running on Indian roads — and increasingly, Indian mines and infrastructure projects. The P, G, R, and S series are known for their durability, but like any working machine, they require regular maintenance and occasional part replacement.
The challenge in India has always been supply. Authorised Scania dealers exist in major cities, but lead times for genuine parts can stretch to weeks, and the cost of OEM parts is significantly higher than equivalent aftermarket alternatives. For fleet operators running 10, 20, or 50 Scania vehicles, this matters enormously to the cost per kilometre.
This guide draws on over 40 years of experience supplying Scania parts from Mumbai. We cover the most common failure points by series, the parts where OEM is worth the premium, and where a quality aftermarket equivalent makes more practical sense.
Before sourcing any part, it helps to understand which Scania generation you are working with. Scania has sold several distinct series in India, and parts do not always cross over between them.
The Scania P series is the most common in Indian fleets — used extensively in tipping trucks, tankers, and short-haul logistics. Engine options range from the DC09 (9-litre, 280–360 hp) to the DC13 (13-litre, 410–450 hp). The P series has a lower cab-over design making it well-suited for Indian road and loading conditions.
The G series sits between the P and R in terms of cab height and specification. Popular in long-haul and inter-city applications. Shares many driveline components with the R series, which makes parts cross-referencing useful.
Scania's flagship truck range in India. The R series is used by premium logistics operators and in heavy mining haulage. DC13 and DC16 engine options. The R series has a higher cab that improves driver comfort on long routes. Gearbox options include the Scania GRS (range-split) manual and the Scania Opticruise automated gearbox.
The S series uses the same chassis as the R but with a higher, flat-floor cab. Less common in India but present in premium logistics fleets. Shares almost all mechanical components with the R series.
Scania buses operate in state transport and private intercity fleets. The K series (rear-engine) and N series (front-engine) are both represented in India. Engine, cooling, and brake parts are the highest-demand categories for bus operators.
Scania's DC9 and DC13 engines are robust but have known wear patterns under Indian operating conditions — heavy loads, dusty environments, and inconsistent fuel quality.
| Part | Typical Interval | OEM vs Aftermarket |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel filter (primary + secondary) | Every 30,000 km | Aftermarket acceptable — use reputable brands |
| Air filter (primary element) | Every 20,000–40,000 km depending on dust | Aftermarket acceptable |
| Oil filter | Every 30,000 km | Aftermarket acceptable |
| Injectors (PDE or HPI) | Inspect at 300,000 km; replace on condition | OEM strongly recommended — calibration critical |
| Cylinder head gasket | Replace on condition / overheating events | OEM or quality aftermarket only |
| Turbocharger | Replace on condition | OEM or reputable reman unit |
| Water pump | Replace on condition (coolant leak, noise) | Quality aftermarket acceptable |
| EGR valve | Clean/replace at 200,000 km in BS4/BS6 vehicles | OEM for BS6; aftermarket acceptable for older |
Injector note: Scania uses two injector technologies — PDE (Pump-Drain Element, older) and HPI (High Pressure Injection, newer). These are not interchangeable. Always confirm which system your engine uses before ordering. If in doubt, share your VIN or engine serial with us on WhatsApp.
The Scania GRS gearbox (range-split) and the GRSo (overdrive variant) are workhorses but require correct specification oil and periodic inspection of synchromesh rings and range cylinder seals.
Scania uses an air-disc brake system on most current models in India. This is superior in performance to drum brakes but requires correct pad compound and rotor specification.
| Component | Replace Indicator | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Brake pads (front) | Below 4mm | Always replace axle pairs |
| Brake pads (rear) | Below 4mm | Always replace axle pairs |
| Brake disc | Below minimum thickness marked on disc | Never machine Scania discs — replace |
| Caliper guide pin kit | At every pad change | Seized pins cause uneven pad wear |
| Air dryer cartridge | Every 2 years or 200,000 km | Neglected air dryers cause valve failures downstream |
| Brake chamber diaphragm | On condition / air leak | Spring brake chambers: replace complete unit |
Indian road conditions — potholes, overloaded vehicles, rough mine haul roads — put suspension components under considerable stress.
Scania trucks in India are frequently operated in high-vibration, high-heat environments that accelerate electrical wear.
The question every fleet manager faces. Here is a practical framework based on our experience supplying both OEM and aftermarket Scania parts over decades:
| Part Category | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Injectors (PDE/HPI) | OEM only | Calibration tolerances are critical; cheap alternatives cause misfires and engine damage |
| Brake discs | OEM or premium aftermarket | Safety-critical; incorrect metallurgy causes cracking |
| Clutch assembly | Quality aftermarket acceptable | Well-established aftermarket suppliers match OEM spec at 40–60% of cost |
| Filters (oil, fuel, air) | Quality aftermarket acceptable | No meaningful performance difference with reputable brands |
| EGR (BS6 vehicles) | OEM recommended | BS6 tolerance stack-up means aftermarket EGR valves risk triggering fault codes |
| Suspension parts | Quality aftermarket acceptable | Springs, shocks, and bushes are well-covered by aftermarket |
| Electrical (alternator, starter) | Quality aftermarket acceptable | Reputable remanufactured units are cost-effective and reliable |
| Turbocharger | OEM or reputable reman | Balancing tolerances matter; unknown brands fail quickly |
Scania part numbers follow a consistent format: a 7-digit numeric code (e.g., 1388521, 1861019). When sourcing parts, always quote the full 7-digit number if you have it. Do not truncate or guess at the number.
If you do not have the part number, you need three pieces of information:
With these three, our parts team can identify the exact specification and cross-reference to both OEM and quality aftermarket alternatives. Send them via WhatsApp and we respond within the hour during business hours.
Scania OEM parts are priced in Euros ex-Sweden and imported, which means Indian prices are significantly higher than European equivalents once customs duty, GST, and dealer margin are applied. As a rough guide:
| Part | OEM (approx.) | Quality Aftermarket (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel filter set (primary + secondary) | ₹3,500–5,000 | ₹1,200–2,000 |
| Clutch kit (cover + disc + bearing) | ₹45,000–65,000 | ₹18,000–28,000 |
| Brake pad set (per axle) | ₹12,000–18,000 | ₹5,000–9,000 |
| Brake disc (each) | ₹18,000–28,000 | ₹8,000–14,000 |
| Water pump | ₹22,000–35,000 | ₹9,000–15,000 |
| Turbocharger (exchange) | ₹85,000–1,50,000 | ₹35,000–65,000 |
| Air spring bellow (rear) | ₹14,000–22,000 | ₹6,000–10,000 |
