The Hitachi ZX330 sits in the 33-tonne class — between the popular 20-tonne machines and the 40–50-tonne mining excavators. In India, it is the excavator of choice for large quarry operations, dam construction, and heavy road cutting where the ZX200's reach and breakout force fall short but a full mining-class machine is disproportionate to the task. In Africa and the Middle East, the ZX330 is extensively used in iron ore, copper, and aggregate quarrying operations.
The ZX330 has been through three active generations in Indian and export fleets: ZX330-3 (2006–2013), ZX330-5 (2013–2019), and ZX330-5A/5B (2019–present). This guide covers the generation differences that matter for parts ordering, the 6HK1 engine maintenance requirements, and the HPV145 pump system.
The ZX330-3 uses the Isuzu 6HK1XQP engine — a 7.8-litre six-cylinder turbocharged unit producing 188 kW (252 hp). This is a mechanically injected engine, making it highly reliable and field-serviceable. The hydraulic pump is the Hitachi HPV145 — a tandem variable-displacement axial-piston unit producing up to 2 × 145 cc/rev, architecturally similar to the Kawasaki K3V140. The HIOS III control system provides Power, Standard, and Economy modes.
The ZX330-5 introduced the Isuzu Tier 4 Interim engine — the AH-6HK1XKSA producing 192 kW (258 hp). Indian and most export market versions retained mechanical injection. The HIOS V system improved pump-engine matching, and the hydraulic system was updated with the ZX330-5's advanced hydraulic control valve. The cab received a larger monitor display and ZAXIS Link telematics. Many pump and engine components are shared with the -3 generation, but control valve cartridges and electronic modules differ.
Current generation ZX330-5A (Asia spec) and ZX330-5B (with EcoMode Plus) meet BS IV / Tier 4 Final requirements where mandated. Key changes from -5: redesigned hydraulic main valve block with improved flow sharing, updated pump regulators, revised cab with 8-inch colour monitor. Engine parts remain 6HK1 architecture but with updated injection timing maps. Confirm serial prefix before ordering electronic components.
| Filter | Hitachi Part Number | Interval | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil filter | 4605358 | 500 hrs | Isuzu 6HK1; cartridge type |
| Fuel filter primary | 4616354 | 500 hrs | Water separator bowl; drain water every 250 hrs |
| Fuel filter secondary | 4616355 | 500 hrs | Changed with primary |
| Air filter outer | 4604975 | 1,000 hrs | Check indicator every 250 hrs in dust |
| Air filter inner | 4604976 | 3,000 hrs | Never clean — replace only |
| Hydraulic return filter | 4448306 | 1,000 hrs | Element replacement |
| Hydraulic pilot filter | 4448307 | 1,000 hrs | Critical — check first on slow/unresponsive controls |
The HPV145 is a robust pump but its higher displacement means it generates proportionally more heat at high load. Key diagnostic procedure: measure case drain flow at rated engine speed with machine at operating temperature. Normal case drain flow is 3–5 L/min per section. Flow above 10–12 L/min per section indicates significant slipper pad and cylinder block wear, warranting pump rebuild or replacement.
Rebuild components for the HPV145 include the cylinder block assembly (9 pistons per section), piston shoe set, valve plate set, shaft seal, and charge pump gear set. A complete pump rebuild with new OEM or Kawasaki K3V140-compatible aftermarket parts costs ₹80,000–1,40,000 depending on parts quality — compared to ₹4,50,000–7,00,000 for a new pump.
| Component | Configuration | Replacement Indicator | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Track chain | 2 × 49 links (ZX330-3), 2 × 50 links (ZX330-5) | >2% chain elongation | SALT chain recommended for quarry |
| Bottom rollers | 8 per side (16 total) | Flange below 10 mm remaining | Replace in sets for even wear |
| Carrier rollers | 2 per side (4 total) | Tread below 15 mm | Often delayed; check seal condition |
| Front idler | 1 per side | Tread below 120 mm | Rebound idler spring check with every replacement |
| Sprocket | 1 per side | Hook-shaped tooth profile | Replace when teeth show recurve |
Undercarriage cost note: A full ZX330 undercarriage set (chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets) is ₹3,50,000–6,00,000 in quality aftermarket. Run the machine to 50% chain elongation before full replacement — at that point replace chains, sprockets, and rollers simultaneously to avoid accelerating new component wear.
