ZX450 Model Family
The Hitachi ZX450 sits in the large excavator class, competing with CAT 336, Komatsu PC400, and Volvo EC380. It is one of the most common large excavators in Indian mining and infrastructure contracts. Key variants operating in India:
- ZX450-3: Isuzu 6WG1-TCC engine, 270 kW (362 hp), Tier 2 — dominant variant on large mining contracts
- ZX450LC-3: Long-crawler version with wider undercarriage gauge — same powertrain
- ZX470LC-3: 270 kW, slightly increased lift capacity over ZX450LC-3
- ZX490LC-6: Isuzu 6WG1-TCN, Tier 4 Interim — post-2013 units with SCR aftertreatment
Operating weight is approximately 46 tonnes. Standard bucket capacity ranges from 2.0 to 2.5 m³. Arm cylinder bore is 180 mm.
Isuzu 6WG1 Engine Service Parts
The 6WG1-TCC (ZX450-3) and 6WG1-TCN (ZX490LC-6) share the same block. The ZX490 adds SCR/DEF dosing — keep the AdBlue pump and injector assemblies on the critical-parts list for Tier 4 machines.

Note: Common rail injector removal on the 6WG1 requires the Bosch CRIN service tool. Do not attempt removal without the correct puller — the injector body will seize to the bore on high-hour engines and can crack the head if forced.
Kawasaki K5V200 Hydraulic Main Pump
The ZX450-3 runs two Kawasaki K5V200 variable displacement piston pumps in tandem on a single input shaft. Flow rate is 2 × 200 L/min at 2,050 rpm. Maximum operating pressure is 35 MPa. This is the highest-value replaceable component on the ZX450 — do not neglect hydraulic oil and filter service.
Critical service schedule for the hydraulic system:
- Hydraulic oil change: every 4,000 hr — use Hitachi Suplex or equivalent ISO VG46 HVLP
- Hydraulic return filter: every 1,000 hr, part 4648804
- Case drain filter: every 1,000 hr, part 4632218
- Pump shaft seal kit (front): replace on visible weeping — part 9099970 (Kawasaki K5V seal kit)
Diagnosis: Main pump failure presents as slow attachment cycle times, unequal left/right swing speed, and hydraulic oil temperature rise without load. Test main relief pressure: specification is 34.8 MPa. A reading below 33 MPa indicates pump wear — do not defer replacement.
Swing and Travel Motor
The swing motor is a Kawasaki MAG-170VP. The swing holding brake is spring-applied and hydraulically released. If the swing brake does not fully release, check the brake release valve and pilot pressure — minimum 2.9 MPa is required for full release. Insufficient pilot pressure will cause brake-on swing operation, destroying the motor and reducer within hours.
Inspect the swing motor drain plug for metallic paste at every 500 hr service. Swing reducer grease points require greasing every 8 hours of operation — not once per day. Most operator-related swing reducer failures in India trace directly to under-greasing.
Travel motor is a Kawasaki TM40VC 2-speed with auto-shift. If the machine will not shift into high travel speed, check the shuttle valve and travel speed select solenoid before condemning the motor.
Undercarriage — ZX450-3
Track gauge: 2,700 mm standard (ZX450-3) or 2,990 mm (ZX450LC-3). Track pitch: 190 mm. Standard shoes are 600 mm triple-grouser (ZX450) and 700 mm (ZX450LC). Eight bottom rollers per side, two carrier rollers per side.

Caution: When removing and refitting the travel reducer cover after track removal, always use a new O-ring and torque cover bolts to 350 Nm. Under-torqued covers allow ingress of fine rock dust which contaminates travel reducer oil and causes rapid gear failure.
Common ZX450 Failures in Indian Mining
Swing reducer pinion wear is the single most common ZX450 failure reported by Indian operators. The root cause is insufficient greasing — Hitachi specifies every 8 hours, but most site practice is once per day. Fit automatic lubrication systems if the machine runs two shifts.
Stick cylinder rod seal failure is accelerated by airborne dust scoring the exposed rod surface. Inspect the stick cylinder rod for surface scoring weekly — a scored rod destroys new seals within 200 hr. On ZX490LC-6 Tier 4 units, EGR valve soot buildup requires cleaning every 2,000 hr; blocked EGR causes over-temperature, power derate, and potential DPF failure.
Recommended field spares per two ZX450 units: One K5V200 pump shaft seal kit (9099970), one set of hydraulic return and case drain filters, one 6WG1 oil filter, fuel filter set, and one swing reducer grease point adapter set.
