Failure Symptoms

A clogged fuel filter will initially cause a noticeable decrease in engine power, especially under load, and may lead to rough idling or hesitation. If the restriction worsens, the engine may begin to misfire, stall, or become difficult to start. Continued operation with a severely restricted filter can lead to premature failure of the fuel injection pump and injectors.

Installation Tip

Before installing the new filter, pre-fill it with clean diesel fuel to minimize the amount of air in the system, which aids in easier starting. Ensure the gasket makes full contact and tighten only by hand as specified, avoiding overtightening.

Service Note

Inspect and replace the primary fuel filter/water separator and the engine oil filter at the same time.
