Failure Symptoms

The first sign of a clogged oil filter is often a gradual increase in oil pressure or a warning light indicating low oil pressure. The engine oil may also appear darker or contain visible sludge. If ignored, the filter's bypass valve may open, allowing unfiltered oil to circulate, leading to accelerated internal engine wear.

Installation Tip

Always lubricate the rubber gasket on the new filter with clean engine oil before installation to ensure a proper seal. Hand-tighten the filter firmly after the gasket makes contact, then give it an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn.

Service Note

When performing an oil change, it is also recommended to inspect the engine oil pan for any sediment and check the condition of the oil drain plug and washer.
