Never run an engine without a filter — even briefly causes abrasive damage. Pre-fill fuel filters with clean fuel before fitting to reduce prime time. Replace O-rings on filter housings every second service. Record change dates on filter housing.

Failure Symptoms

Early signs of a failing water separator include the fuel filter warning light illuminating or a slight decrease in engine power. If left unaddressed, water will enter the fuel injection system, leading to misfires, rough idling, and potential damage to injectors and the fuel pump. Continued operation with water in the fuel can cause significant and costly damage to the engine's critical fuel delivery components.

Installation Tip

Always drain any accumulated water from the separator bowl before attempting to remove the old element. Ensure the new element's O-ring seal is properly lubricated with clean fuel before installation to prevent leaks.
