118-5144 Coolant Temperature Switch — Cat 3116 3126

This coolant temperature switch is an essential sensor that monitors the engine's operating temperature and signals the ECM or gauge. It is built with precise calibration to ensure accurate readings, preventing overheating or undercooling issues that a faulty switch might cause. Operators may observe an inaccurate temperature gauge reading, the cooling fan operating constantly, or warning lights illuminating if this switch fails.

Installation & Application Notes

Inspect mating surfaces for wear before fitting. Use torque specs from service manual. Replace gaskets and seals as a set — reusing compressed gaskets causes oil leaks. Clean all oil passages with compressed air.

Always consult the OEM service manual for model-specific torque values and procedures. WhatsApp our technical team if you need fitment guidance.

Failure Symptoms

A malfunctioning coolant temperature switch might initially cause the temperature gauge to read incorrectly, either too high or too low. If the switch fails to signal properly, the cooling fan may not engage when needed, leading to overheating. The worst consequence is potential engine damage from sustained overheating if the cooling system is not managed correctly.

Installation Tip

Ensure the engine coolant is drained to a level below the switch port before removal to prevent spillage. Do not overtighten the switch, as this can damage the threads in the engine block or cylinder head.

Service Note

Inspect the radiator and cooling fan operation when replacing the coolant temperature switch.
