Bearings and bushings in heavy equipment: From engine crankshaft main bearings to bucket pin bushings, these components support rotating or oscillating loads under high force. Wear is normal and expected — the question is managing replacement before spalling or seizure causes secondary damage to shafts, housings, and bores.

Wear indicators: Radial play in bucket/stick/boom pins (check with a pry bar — any detectable movement at pins indicates bushing wear). Noise from travel motors or swing bearing (grinding or rumbling suggests roller or race wear). Oil analysis showing elevated copper (main bearing wear) or iron (general metallic wear) are laboratory early-warning tools.

Greasing discipline: Most excavator and bulldozer pin joints require greasing every 10–50 hours. In dusty or muddy conditions, increase frequency. Under-greasing allows dirt contamination between pin and bushing, accelerating wear from abrasion. Over-greasing wastes grease and can blow dust seals — follow OEM specifications.

Replacement guidance: Replace bushings in matched sets — replacing only the worn component leaves a new surface running against a worn mating surface, causing accelerated re-wear. After installation, grease the joint immediately and check alignment. Interference-fit bushings require proper pressing tools to avoid distortion during installation.
