Failure Symptoms

The initial symptom of a failing water pump pulley is often a squealing or grinding noise from the bearing, or visible wobble. If ignored, the bearing can seize, causing the drive belt to break or slip, leading to a loss of power for multiple accessories including the alternator and power steering. The most critical consequence is the potential for the engine to overheat due to the water pump stopping.

Installation Tip

Ensure the mounting surface for the pulley is clean and free of rust before installation. Do not use excessive force when pressing the pulley onto the water pump shaft, as this can damage the shaft or bearing.

Service Note

Inspect the condition of the drive belt and other accessory pulleys (alternator, power steering, A/C) for wear or damage at the same time.
