Never run an engine without a filter — even briefly causes abrasive damage. Pre-fill fuel filters with clean fuel before fitting to reduce prime time. Replace O-rings on filter housings every second service. Record change dates on filter housing.

Failure Symptoms

A failing oil filter can initially cause the engine oil to darken more rapidly than usual, indicating poor filtration. If the filter becomes completely clogged, the bypass valve will open, allowing unfiltered oil to circulate, leading to increased friction and wear on engine components. This can ultimately result in severe internal engine damage and premature failure.

Installation Tip

Always lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with a thin film of clean engine oil before installation to ensure a proper seal. Hand-tighten the filter until the gasket contacts the mounting surface, then tighten an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn, or as specified by the manufacturer.

Service Note

Check the engine oil level and condition, and inspect the oil pan and drain plug for any signs of leaks or damage when changing the oil filter.
