Failure Symptoms

An old or failing oil filter may initially show as slightly darker engine oil or a minor increase in oil pressure fluctuations. If ignored, the filter can become completely clogged, leading to oil bypassing the filter media and circulating dirty oil, or the anti-drainback valve may fail, causing oil starvation on startup. The ultimate consequence is accelerated internal engine wear and potential component seizure.

Installation Tip

Always lubricate the rubber gasket on the new filter with clean engine oil before installation to ensure a proper seal and prevent damage during tightening. Do not overtighten the filter; snug it up by hand and then give it a quarter to half turn.

Service Note

When changing the oil filter, it is crucial to also change the engine oil and inspect the oil drain plug and its washer for wear or damage.
