Failure Symptoms

The first indication of a clogged oil filter is often a slight increase in engine operating temperature or a dimming of the oil pressure warning light. If ignored, the filter's bypass valve may open, allowing unfiltered oil to circulate, leading to accelerated internal engine wear. Eventually, this can result in significant damage to bearings and other moving parts.

Installation Tip

Lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter with clean engine oil before installation to ensure a proper seal. Do not overtighten the filter; hand-tighten plus a quarter turn is usually sufficient.

Service Note

Check the engine oil level and condition, and inspect the oil pan and drain plug for leaks when replacing the oil filter.
