Failure Symptoms

A failing bypass oil filter may not present obvious immediate symptoms, but over time, oil analysis might show increased particulate contamination. If the filter becomes severely clogged, it can lead to a slight increase in oil pressure and reduced overall oil flow effectiveness. The primary risk of an ignored, clogged bypass filter is accelerated wear on critical engine components due to less-than-optimal oil cleanliness.

Installation Tip

Ensure the filter mounting surface on the engine block is clean and free of old gasket material before installing the new filter. Hand-tighten the filter, then give it an additional 3/4 to 1 full turn as specified by the manufacturer.

Service Note

When replacing the bypass oil filter, it is also a good time to inspect and replace the main oil filter and check the engine oil level.
