21983651 A.C. Belt Tensioner — Volvo FMX FE Series trucks — FH400

This A.C. Belt Tensioner is an essential component of the engine's accessory drive system, maintaining the correct tension on the serpentine or V-belt. Proper belt tension is critical for the efficient operation of accessories like the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. A worn or failed tensioner can lead to a loose belt, causing squealing noises, reduced accessory performance, or the belt slipping off entirely. Operators may notice a loud squealing sound from the engine bay, especially during acceleration or when accessories are engaged.

Installation & Application Notes

Inspect mating surfaces for wear before fitting. Use torque specs from service manual. Replace gaskets and seals as a set — reusing compressed gaskets causes oil leaks. Clean all oil passages with compressed air.

Always consult the OEM service manual for model-specific torque values and procedures. WhatsApp our technical team if you need fitment guidance.

Failure Symptoms

The most common symptom of a failing belt tensioner is a persistent squealing noise from the engine bay, particularly noticeable when the engine is started or under load. If the tensioner continues to degrade, the belt may begin to slip intermittently, leading to reduced performance of accessories like the air conditioning or alternator. Ultimately, a completely failed tensioner can cause the belt to break or come off, leading to a loss of power steering, battery charging, and engine cooling.

Installation Tip

Before removing the old tensioner, note the direction of spring tension for correct installation of the new unit. Ensure the mounting bolt is torqued to the manufacturer's specification to prevent premature failure.

Service Note

Inspect the accessory drive belt and all pulleys for signs of wear, damage, or misalignment when replacing the belt tensioner.
