Failure Symptoms

A failing fan belt may initially cause squealing noises from the engine compartment, especially upon startup or acceleration, and intermittent issues with accessory function like dimming lights or a weak charge. If the belt breaks, it will immediately lead to loss of power steering, alternator function, and water pump operation, potentially causing rapid engine overheating and battery discharge. A broken belt can also damage other engine components if it wraps around them.

Installation Tip

Ensure the tensioner pulley is functioning correctly and has adequate travel to properly tension the new belt. Avoid using excessive force or pry tools against the belt itself when installing, as this can damage the belt's internal structure.

Service Note

When replacing the fan belt, inspect the condition and alignment of all accessory pulleys, including the tensioner and idler pulleys, for wear or wobble.
