Braking systems in heavy equipment: Large crawler and wheel-type equipment use either wet disc brakes (immersed in oil for cooling) or dry disc brakes. Wet disc systems on wheel loaders and motor graders are highly durable but require specific brake oil separate from hydraulic oil — oil contamination is a common failure cause. Crawler machines typically use spring-applied hydraulic-released parking brakes on their travel drives.

Critical safety component: Brake failure on a loaded wheel loader or motor grader at a mine ramp can be catastrophic. Brake disc thickness should be inspected at every major service. In India's high-temperature operating environments, brake fade under repeated downhill loaded cycles is a real risk — ensure cooling passages are clear.

Failure indicators: Reduced stopping distance, brake drag (machine resistance when brakes are released), excessive brake pedal travel, brake-on-drive warning lamps, and shimmy or vibration under braking all indicate worn or contaminated brake components. Service brake and parking brake systems should be tested separately.

Fluid discipline: Never use standard hydraulic oil in wet brake circuits requiring dedicated brake fluid — check OEM specifications. Contaminated brake oil causes disc swelling, glazing, and erratic brake response. Flush and refill brake circuits at major overhaul intervals.
