Cooling system overview: Heavy equipment cooling systems must dissipate enormous heat loads — a 200 kW diesel engine rejects roughly 150–200 kW through its cooling system. Components include the radiator, oil cooler, water pump, thermostat, fan motor, fan clutch, coolant hoses, and overflow reservoir. System failure leads directly to engine seizure.
Indian climate challenges: In Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and other high-heat states, ambient temperatures regularly exceed 42°C — pushing coolant temps close to thermostat limits even at idle. Dusty conditions rapidly clog radiator fins, reducing airflow. Clean radiator cores every 500 hours; use compressed air from the engine side out.
Failure signs: Rising temperature gauge, coolant loss without visible external leaks (indicates head gasket or internal failure), white steam from exhaust (coolant burning), sweet smell in cab, and foam in expansion tank. Act immediately at the first gauge abnormality — overheated engines can warp cylinder heads in minutes.
Coolant maintenance: Use OEM-specified coolant type (Komatsu Super Coolant, CAT ELC, etc.). Never mix coolant types. Change coolant every 2 years or 4,000 hours. Maintain 50/50 antifreeze/water ratio even in India — antifreeze provides corrosion inhibitors critical for aluminium components. Flush system when changing coolant types.

Use the coolant type specified in your machine's OMM: Komatsu Super Coolant, CAT ELC (Extended Life Coolant), Volvo Coolant VCS, etc. Never mix coolant types — it causes silicate precipitation that blocks passages. Always maintain a 50/50 antifreeze/water ratio even in Indian conditions, as antifreeze provides critical corrosion inhibitors.
Standard coolant: replace every 2 years or 4,000 hours. Extended-life coolant (CAT ELC, Komatsu Super Coolant): every 6,000 hours or as indicated by test strip. Flush system completely when changing coolant types — do not simply top up a different type.
Common causes beyond radiator failure: blocked coolant passages from scale buildup (especially with incorrect coolant), failed thermostat (stuck closed), air-locked cooling circuit (check for air bleeds), worn water pump impeller, fan belt slippage, failed hydraulic oil cooler, or clogged radiator fins (clean with compressed air from engine side).
No — plain water causes severe corrosion of aluminium cylinder heads, water pump impellers, and radiator tubes within months. It also has a lower boiling point, leading to steam formation in hot spots. Always use a minimum 33% antifreeze/coolant concentration to maintain corrosion inhibitor levels.
PTC maintains an extensive database of cooling system parts for both current and legacy machine models. Even for machines discontinued 15–20 years ago, we can typically source or fabricate replacement radiator cores. Contact us with your machine model and serial number.
