Failure Symptoms

A worn alternator pulley may produce a high-pitched squealing noise, especially under load or during startup. If left unaddressed, the pulley can seize or the belt may slip excessively, leading to a loss of battery charging and potential overheating if the water pump is belt-driven. This can result in unexpected equipment shutdown.

Installation Tip

Ensure the new pulley is perfectly aligned with the crankshaft pulley and other accessory pulleys before tightening. Overtightening the pulley retaining bolt can damage the alternator shaft or the pulley itself.

Service Note

Inspect the alternator belt for wear and proper tension, and check the alternator bearings for smoothness of rotation when replacing the pulley.
