4N8225 Pulley-Alternator — Cat 3406

This is an alternator pulley, a critical component of the engine's charging system that drives the alternator. It is manufactured to meet stringent quality standards, ensuring durability and efficient power transfer, unlike a worn pulley that may exhibit cracks or excessive play. Operators may notice a dimming of lights, a battery warning light illumination, or a complete loss of electrical power when this component fails.

Failure Symptoms

A worn alternator pulley may produce a high-pitched squealing noise, especially under load. If the pulley seizes or the belt slips excessively, the battery will not charge, leading to a gradual depletion of electrical power. Eventually, critical engine functions may cease due to lack of electrical power.

Installation Tip

Ensure the new pulley is perfectly aligned with the crankshaft pulley and the alternator pulley before tightening. Overtightening the pulley bolt can damage the alternator shaft or the pulley itself.

Service Note

Inspect the alternator belt for wear, cracks, or glazing, and check the alternator bearings for noise or play when replacing the pulley.
