256-9657 Connecting Rod — Cat

This connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft, transmitting combustion forces to create rotational motion. Manufactured from high-strength forged steel to meet CAT's rigorous performance standards, it ensures reliable power transfer, unlike worn or damaged rods that can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Operators may first notice unusual knocking sounds from the engine, followed by a significant loss of power and potential engine seizure if the rod fails.

Installation & Application Notes

Inspect mating surfaces for wear before fitting. Use torque specs from service manual. Replace gaskets and seals as a set — reusing compressed gaskets causes oil leaks. Clean all oil passages with compressed air.

Always consult the OEM service manual for model-specific torque values and procedures. WhatsApp our technical team if you need fitment guidance.

Failure Symptoms

An audible knocking or rattling sound from the engine, particularly under load, is the first indication of a connecting rod issue. As the problem progresses, the noise will intensify, and a significant loss of engine power will be noticeable. A complete rod failure will result in catastrophic engine damage, leading to immediate seizure and rendering the equipment inoperable.

Installation Tip

Ensure the cylinder bore is clean and free of debris, and that the crankshaft journal is perfectly smooth and within tolerance before installation. Never reuse connecting rod bolts; always install new ones with the correct torque sequence.

Service Note

Always replace connecting rod bearings when installing a new connecting rod, and ensure the crankshaft journals are inspected for wear and damage.
