CATCooling System

1730419 Spider As-Fan — Cat 583R 587R

This Spider As-Fan is a crucial component of the cooling system, connecting the fan to the water pump or engine pulley on Caterpillar D8R series tractors. It ensures the fan rotates at the correct speed to draw air through the radiator, maintaining optimal engine temperature, unlike a worn or broken spider which causes fan wobble and reduced airflow. Operators might notice excessive fan noise, vibration, or a consistent overheating issue if this part is compromised.

Installation & Application Notes

Flush cooling system with distilled water before refilling. Use pre-mixed coolant — never plain water, which causes corrosion. Pressure-test system after any cooling repair. Check thermostat by immersing in hot water — should open at rated temperature.

Always consult the OEM service manual for model-specific torque values and procedures. WhatsApp our technical team if you need fitment guidance.

Failure Symptoms

The initial symptom of a failing spider is often an audible clicking or rattling noise from the fan area, especially at higher engine RPMs. If ignored, this can progress to noticeable fan wobble, reduced airflow, and a gradual increase in engine temperature. The worst consequence is potential fan detachment or damage to surrounding cooling components.

Installation Tip

Ensure the fan blades are properly aligned and balanced before tightening the spider mounting bolts. Do not reuse old bolts, as they may be stretched or weakened.

Service Note

Inspect the fan belt tension and condition, as well as the radiator for any damage, when replacing the fan spider.
