The undercarriage accounts for up to 50% of total excavator maintenance costs. For the Komatsu PC200—India's most popular excavator—understanding exactly when and what to replace can save lakhs of rupees per year.
The 6 Key Undercarriage Components
- Track Shoes (Link Assembly) — The shoes (pads) that contact the ground. Available in standard, narrow, and wide configurations. Replace when grouser height drops below 50% of original.
- Bottom Rollers (Track Rollers) — Support the machine weight on the track. The Komatsu PC200 has 7 bottom rollers per side (14 total). Replace when oil leak begins or when diameter drops by 5mm below spec.
- Top Rollers (Carrier Rollers) — 2 per side, guide the track on the top. Replace when abnormal noise begins.
- Front Idler — Guides the track at the front, acts as a tension wheel. Replace when diameter drops 8mm below spec or oil seal fails.
- Sprocket — The drive wheel that meshes with the track links. Replace when tooth wear reaches 1/3 of original thickness.
- Track Adjuster (Recoil Spring) — Maintains track tension. Adjust when track sag exceeds 20-30mm.
