How to Spot Fake Heavy Equipment Parts: A Buyer's Guide for India
Published: 2026-02-20 • Parts Trading Company, Mumbai
India's spare parts market is a double-edged sword. Competitive pricing has made it one of the world's most dynamic, but it has also made it a target for counterfeit and substandard parts that put equipment and operators at risk.
As a 70-year supplier of heavy equipment parts, we've seen the full spectrum—genuine OEM, quality aftermarket, and dangerous counterfeits. Here's how to tell them apart.
8 Warning Signs of Counterfeit Parts
- Packaging inconsistencies — Genuine parts have consistent, high-quality packaging. Look for spelling errors, blurry logos, and non-standard fonts on packaging as immediate red flags.
- Missing OEM part numbers — Every genuine part has a clearly stamped or printed OEM part number. If a supplier can't provide the OEM number, walk away.
- Weight differences — Metal parts should match the weight of the genuine article. Counterfeit parts often use inferior alloys that are measurably lighter.
- Surface finish quality — Genuine parts have precise machining with smooth, consistent surface finishes. Counterfeit parts often show machining marks, rough edges, or inconsistent plating.
- Price too cheap to be true — If a brake component is 80% cheaper than the OEM price, it's not an aftermarket bargain—it's a counterfeit. Quality aftermarket parts are typically 30-50% below OEM, not 70-80%.
- No traceability — Reputable suppliers provide batch numbers, country of origin, and supplier documentation. No paperwork means no accountability.
- Wrong tolerances — For precision parts like bearings or seals, check tolerances with a micrometer. Counterfeits often fail at this test.
- Buy from unknown grey market channels — Parts purchased from unverified online marketplaces or unknown local traders carry significant counterfeit risk.
Quality Aftermarket vs Counterfeit
Not all non-OEM parts are counterfeits. Quality aftermarket parts are manufactured by reputable third parties to OEM specifications. Brands like Haldex, WABCO, LuK, Ferodo, and Valeo make products that meet or exceed OEM standards.
The key difference: quality aftermarket parts come with documentation, batch traceability, and supplier accountability. Counterfeits come with none of these.
